The Land Rover brand is know around the world for their accomplishments in the off road adventure vehicle market. In recent years the company has almost entirely abandon their Focus on off-road capabilities to move towards a luxury land boat kind of play. The Land Rover Discovery was the last of the great adventure capable vehicles with sold axles front and rear, along with a heavy duty ladder frame construction. The Discovery has to be one of the most understated off road worthy vehicles out there. This is partially because of how harmless they look in a stock configuration. While land rover did an amazing job covering up the brute like features of this SUV, I personally like these vehicles much more with out the van like front bumper that covers all the interesting drive line components. With the removal of the front bumper the discovery becomes an even better beast suitable for almost any climate and environment. Sporty Driving on and off road While most solid axle vehicles drive like boats with bad attitudes, the discovery feels more like a 6400lbs go-kart that will go anywhere given the time. This is in part because of a few key features like the massive 3ft radius arm style geometry. The radius arms, coupled with a linear action watts link set up in the back, let the rover glide over terrain at respectable speeds. Along with a well designed stock suspension geometry, Land Rover was the first to integrate an active torsion/roll bar that almost eliminates body roll entirely. This not only gives the Land Rover its sport car like steering response, but also means that the torsion bars can be turned off at low speeds to allow more articulation when crawling the rock gardens. To give better performance from the suspension the Discovery was also one of the first SUVs to have air suspension fitted to the rear. While the air system made for a nice ride, the reliability factor goes out the window. Most Rover owners will end up switching to an after market spring and shock set up such as Old Man Emu sport shocks to eliminate the chances of the air ride going out. After a day of adventure off road it’s always nice to know that the Land Rover will take me back home in comfort and luxury. With seating for up to 7, with the additional two jumper seats in the back, the discovery is surprisingly spacious for how small of a wheel base it has. For creature comforts there is dual climate control up front with heat and A/C in the back along with two nicely placed sun roofs for ventilation. All the extra windows really bring in the light from the surrounding environment and give a much more immersive feel when driving in scenic locations. For a car designed back in the 90’s the Discovery has quite a lot of electronic gismos that do too many things to even explain, but some of the most notable are the Four wheel ABS and TCS, heated seats, heated front and rear windshield, home link RF, intelligent electronic gear box, and many other fancy buttons play with as you prowl the lands. Where Land Rover missed their mark The land rover discovery has to be one of my favorite vehicles however there is still plenty of room for improvement. One of my biggest gripes with this vehicle is the engine. With a natural aspirated with making a mere 188HP and 250 Ft/lbs, You won’t be going anywhere in a hurry. The later gave the Discovery a little more push but not enough to really move this 6400lbs beast faster then lame donkey. What’s even more unfortunate is that all rover engines were plagued with a similar problem of overheating. The cooling systems on these trucks are very temperamental and without the proper upkeep don’t provide sufficient cooling. Once the land rover engine overheats there is no going back. The sleeves in the engine Will break apart from the block causing slipped sleeves syndrome or even more common the head gaskets Will be long with being painfully slow in a strait line the discovery suffers from a couple reliability issues with the drive line. One of the most common and dangerous of the drive line issues is the front drive shaft exploding. As the grease and bearings age in the unserviceable double cardan drive shaft it will eventual fail, hurling drive line shrapnel into just about everything underneath the front of the vehicle. This usually results in a massive hole in the transmission and thousands of dollars in repair bills. Most knowledgeable rover owners will either replace or upgrade the drive shaft to prevent the catastrophic failure. The Dust Runners Discovery We refer to the Dust Runners rover as The Panther because of its handling characteristics and stylings. The panther has been through some of the most trying conditions and I have to say, it’s held up pretty well over the years. Just like most peoples vehicles, it’s a work in progress and over the next year it will be going through many changes. Some time last year we took the rover up to Payson Arizona for a little fun in the mud and this video was the result of said adventure.

Posted: 11/01/18 Following 10 years of continued success since its launch in 1989, the second edition of the Discovery launched in 1999. This time, Discovery was now billed not only as a utilitarian vehicle for all purposes, but as an everyday use vehicle, ready for daily family life. Discovery 2 was both longer and wider than its predecessor, with the sole purpose of creating more interior space. Both ride and handling were improved through the addition of Self-Levelling Suspension and Active Corner Enhancement. The exterior design was altered with the rear extended to ensure boot space was used to its full potential. The front of the vehicle also changed with the introduction of pocketed headlights, whilst the turn signals were moved to high-side fixtures. The need for more interior comfort meant a revamp for the interior to make it even more comfortable than the original Discovery. A new engine was introduced, an inline five-cylinder litre diesel which produced more power as well as providing superior fuel efficiency than its predecessor. It was also electronically managed, meaning an improved, smoother ride. The V8 was upgraded to litre and a new exhaust added to improve performance. A Discovery 2 modified for the G4 challenge Along with the upgraded engine and interior design, electronic off-road systems were added for the first time. These included Traction Control, Electronic Brake Distribution and Hill Descent Control, a new development by Land Rover at the time. These systems further expanded Discovery’s now acclaimed off-road capability, with Traction Control and Hill Descent Control now providing driver assistance where previously the centre differential had taken the strain. The locking centre differential did remain, however the linkage to operate it was now no longer attached. In May 2004, production on the Discovery 2 ended in preparation for the production of its successor, the next edition of the Discovery series which brought about its revolution. DISCOVERY 2 - OFF ROAD Compilation. The second generation Discovery hit the sweet spot between the luxury of the Range Rover and the ruggedness of the Defender. The latest Land Rover Discovery may have more off-road ability than most family SUVs, but the brand's new Defender ^{Many of us off-roaders know that Land Rovers are pretty good off-road. Many of us, however, don’t really know much more than that. Even though I call myself a Jeep person I do really like Land Rovers. I loved the Discovery II I owned, up until the engine had a slipped cylinder sleeve. Since so many of us don’t know much about Land Rovers, I figured I would get us all up to speed. So, let’s look at the differences between the Discovery I and the Discovery II. Brief History Land Rover introduced the Discovery in 1989. The Discovery II used the same chassis and engine as the much more expensive Range Rover. Land Rover, however, gave the Discovery I a much lower price point. Early models in the US came equipped with a V8, but Land Rover upgraded later models to the V8. The Discovery I was the vehicle used in the “Camel Trophy” which proved its reliability in all conditions. The Discovery I ended up being a pretty good success and Land Rover introduced the Discovery II in 1999. A Discovery I sits unmolested and ready for the dirt! Both the Discovery I and Discovery II share a similar shape, but Land Rover really modernized the Discovery II. The Discovery II was the first SUV to use airbag suspension and an optional cornering enhancement system known as ACE. Unfortunately, Land Rover killed off some of the features that Land Rover enthusiasts loved such as the center differential lock. In 2004 Land Rover ended the Discovery II, which was replaced by the much less loved LR3. CDL Since the Discovery I was AWD and not 4WD it needed a differential in the transfer box. This can create some issues when off-road since all power can possibly go to only one axle and one wheel. Land Rover fixed this issue by including a center differential lock (CDL). The CDL splits power 50/50 to the front and rear no matter what. This is great for off-roading and can really help the Discovery I get out of sticky situations. Getting muddy outside of Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately, Land Rover got rid of the center differential lock on the Discovery II. They did this because they added a very advanced traction control system. This made the CDL obsolete in Land Rover’s eyes. While the traction control system is amazing, the possibility of all the power going to one axle is still there. Luckily this is easily cured since the center differential lock is actually there, but the linkage isn’t. Simply installing a linkage will give the Discovery II a CDL. Due to Land Rover enthusiasts complaining about the lack of a CDL on the Discovery II, Land Rover brought it back in late 2003 and 2004. Suspension Both the Discovery I and the Discovery II have a radius arm style suspension. However, the Discovery II comes with air suspension in the rear. While this does increase ride quality and help it off-road, the air-bags are prone to failure. Many people end up swapping the air-bags out for coil springs which are much cheaper and obviously more reliable. The Discovery II also has slightly stronger radius arm bushings. The Discovery II also had an optional sway bar system called ACE, also known as “Active Cornering Enhancement.” This system used a hydraulic pump and hydraulic rams to make the Discovery II corner extremely flat. This system can also completely disengage at low speed to increase articulation. The real differences are the air suspension, radius arm bushings, and optional ACE system. Other than that the Discovery I and Discovery II share the same suspension. They both ride and handle extremely compared to many other solid axle vehicles. Exterior/Interior The exterior and interior differences don’t really matter to the off-road community. So, we’re going to cover them as quickly as possible. The Discovery I is a bit smaller than the Discovery II and has slightly smaller overhangs front and rear. The design is slightly different but they definitely look very similar. The main exterior differences are fender flares, tail lights, turn signals, door handles, and obviously size. The interior got a massive upgrade and more features such as HomeLink. Summary There are plenty of other differences between the two SUVs, but most of them don’t really affect off-road performance. Both trucks are good off-road, but the advanced traction control system in the Discovery II will likely take it further. The small overhangs on the Discovery I make it less likely to take any sort of damage on the trail. Small overhangs can also help the Discovery I climb up extremely steep obstacles. I think my husband knew he wanted these upgrades the minute we purchased our Disco but it took me a few adventures to learn we needed them for my own peace of mind. We wanted a bumper for protection and a winch for getting ourselves and friends out of sticky situations. Our first decision was if we were going to purchase a bumper or have one custom made. After doing some research our final decision largely came down to cost. We live in Canada and the bumpers we were looking to purchase we needed to order out of the USA, our dollar sucks and shipping just adds to the expense. We lucked out and found a local builder that built us a custom bumper and we are happy with the choice we made. He did a great job makinging it simple, beefy and contoured to the front of the Disco 2. We based the design loosely off the Safari Designs and we required clearance for Kingone winch. The bumper was at first coated with one of the Canadian Tire Husky Brand Bed Liner paints which lasted about a season and then started to show signs of rusting. When we had the engine out to be swapped we decided to have the bumper sand blasted and then coated with a spray on bedliner, we went with Line-X from Calgary South. This shop has amazing Customer Service and our Linex has held up perfectly over the years. We have spray on bedliner protection (Line-X brand) on our bumper, roof and rock rails. It is seriously tough and is surprisingly still shiny and looking great after several years. We had them coated with Line-X to help give them grip when walking on them along the side of the vehicle, this is really handy when working on the roof rack. There is a lot of terminology out there when it comes to Rock Sliders, Rails, Guards and Bars. Rock Slider and Rock Rail, I count these terms as the same thing. They are aftermarket, heavy duty rails that attach to the chassis to protect the door sills and bottoms from rock damage when you are out having fun. When you are looking at purchasing any of type of side rock protection check out reviews as some dent went hit even though you think they should be able to take impact. We did have some Linex chipped off in a fender bender but no dents in the Terrafirma (yet) but we aren’t aggressively using them. The rock sliders have also helped teach our son how to walk! They are easy to grab and perfect walking height. .
